Le gendarme Bourrel, cependant, a failli le prendre sur le fait. Excité par le danger, Raboliot multiplie les imprudences et va jusqu'à narguer ouvertement Bourrel. Dès lors, entre les deux hommes commence une lutte sans merci. Traqué, Raboliot doit fuir, vivant dans les bois comme un loup. Au bout de trois mois, accablé de solitude, torturé par le désir de revoir sa femme et ses enfants, Raboliot revient chez lui ... et c'est le drame.
